The latest design from Dyson is based on the success of the company's air multipier fan, a bold bladeless concept released in 2009 which was a "fantastic success" according to Crawford.

Wondering whether the technology could be utilised to heat as well as cool, Dyson's designers noticed a gap in the market.

"There are a lot of heaters, but with a lot of problems - potentially unsafe to touch, don't have high air flow and don't project heat very well." Crawford said of pre-existing rivals.

Seizing the opportunity the development work began, but a finished version would be "hundreds of prototypes" away.

"This product has taken us two and a half years to develop with the help of acoustic, motors, [and] fluid dynamic experts all participating throughout, we've had a lot of different facilities we've used as well - with some poor people in environmental chambers at zero degrees and five degrees making sure our performance is optimised." Crawford explained.
