How to Write an MLA Heading for Essays





MLA Style is the standard format for writing formal papers, academic studies and essays in the United States and not only. The name is an acronym and it stands for the Modern Language Association, an American organization that published the first MLA Style Manual in 1985. Ever since, this style has been adopted by many schools, colleges and universities all across the world.



Writing an essay using MLA style involves following a set of simple and straightforward rules and guidelines.
1. An essay written in the MLA style does not require a title page.
2. The essay has a heading that appears only on the first page and a header that appears on every page.
3. The MLA heading is set in the top-left corner of the first page, 0.5 inches down from the top margin.
4. All the margins of the page are set to 1 inch.
5. Double space text is used all throughout the essay.
6. The heading contains 4 lines:
a. Student’s Full Nameb. Instructor’s Full Name and Title (when applicable)c. Class Information: Course Name and Number, Period (Optional)d. Date in the following format: DD Month (in letters) YYYY
7. There shouldn’t be any extra spaces between the heading and the title.
8. The same font family is used in the heading as in the body of the essay. It is highly recommended that you use an easily readable font such as Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, etc.. Do not use a decorative or script font.
9. No part of the heading should be underlined, bolded or italicized.
10. The standard font size used is 12 pt. It should remain the same all throughout the essay (including the heading, the header and the title). Do not increase the font size to make your paper appear longer.
11. The date in the heading is the due date.
12. The heading appears only on the first page. On all the other pages you’ll have a one-line header consisting of the last name of the student and the number of the page.
13. The header appears in the top right corner of every page.
14. There is no punctuation mark between the last name and the page number in the header. Example of an MLA heading:
