Martin Johnson, the England team manager, has warned his players that they will be returning home early from the Rugby World Cup unless they show a marked improvement from their display against Georgia on Sunday that he described as sloppy.
England won 41-10 and banked a bonus point to move above Scotland at the top of their group but they were forced to defend for long periods by a side playing their second match in four days, and gave away 11 penalties in the first half.
England started the day fourth in the world rankings, 12 places above Georgia. "It was not good enough," Johnson said. "Rugby is a simple game and we overcomplicated things. We needed to maintain possession and failed to. The guys wanted to make things happen but we need to be more patient and smarter.
"I am a bit annoyed. We were sloppy. We made it more difficult than it should have been and I don't want us to be that type of team. If we are happy with those standards then we will be going home early. We have to be tough on ourselves and we are under no illusions that we have to get better.
"I am not being downbeat but realistic. If ever we needed to understand what the game is about at this level, the top match of the weekend, Ireland against Australia, provided the indication. The bigger the game you play, the more simple it is – maintain possession, trust your defence and don't give away penalties, build pressure in all aspects of the game and you will give yourself a chance."
The Georgia coach, Richie Dixon, said his players surprised England. "They did not expect our ferocity," he said. "We put them under a lot of pressure but the pity for us was that we did not take our chances.
"They showed the difference at this level by three times turning us over in their half and running in three tries but I think we gained their respect."
England will this week decide when to replace the loosehead prop Andrew Sheridan, whose World Cup ended after he injured his shoulder against Argentina. His successor on Sunday, Matt Stevens, limped off with six minutes remaining but said that he hoped to be fit for Saturday's game against Romania in Dunedin.
"I jut twisted the ankle," Stevens said. "It does not feel too bad but I will not know more until tomorrow."
The wing Chris Ashton left the ground with his left elbow heavily bound after he fell awkwardly scoring the final try of the game but he expects to be fit to face Romania.
