The Jamaican Yohan Blake ran the second-fastest 200m of all time at the Brussels Diamond League meeting on Friday, upstaging compatriot Usain Bolt, who earlier set the quickest 100m of the season.
Blake, who won the world 100m title in Daegu last month after Bolt was disqualified from the final for false-starting, ran 19.26sec, just 0.07sec behind the world record Bolt set in Berlin in 2009.
Blake was given a congratulatory hug after the race by Bolt, who appears now to have a serious rival over 200m as well as 100m for the Olympic Games in London. "That's amazing for me. I'm shocked he did so well," Bolt said.
"I've seen him run a couple of 200m and he's run them badly. I told him to take it easy round the bend. He ran a wild time."
The 21-year old Blake clearly took Bolt's advice on board and ran a contained curve before powering for the line to take 0.52sec off his personal best. He finished well ahead of the 19.40 Bolt ran to capture the world title in Daegu. "I think all the tutoring just stopped," Bolt said .
Blake's time was faster than the former Olympic champion and world record holder Michael Johnson ever ran, something that surprised the sprinter.
"Tonight I was aiming to run 19.5. I was expecting something fast but not this fast," Blake told the BBC. "The last 40 metres was crazy. I'm like a beast. I just take it out on the track. When I saw him [Bolt] run 19.40 at the worlds I knew I could go fast like that. I am the man next to him next year. I'm looking forward to competing with him next year."
Bolt was slow out of the blocks in the 100m, and had to work hard to pull clear of fellow Jamaican Nesta Carter. His time of 9.76sec was 0.02sec quicker than the previous season's best time, set by Asafa Powell in June, and an improvement on the Olympic champion and world record holder's previous season's best of 9.85sec, set in Zagreb earlier this week.
"It was never a doubt in my mind I would run fast these last two races [in Zagreb and Brussels]," said Bolt afterwards. "Today I was really happy with myself.
"It's [the false start in the world championships] not going to happen again. I made one mistake and I won't let it happen again."
