An inexperienced Tottenham side came through a nail-biting finish to leave Toumba Stadium with a hard-fought point in their opening Group A match against PAOK Salonika. Carlo Cudicini was called upon to make three crucial saves at the death and Vladimir Ivic rattled the Italian's bar in stoppage time.
Earlier Lino had given Tottenham hope by missing a retaken first-half penalty for the hosts while Yago Falqué, making his debut, twice went close for Tottenham and Harry Kane might have been awarded an earlier penalty after being brought down in the box.
The Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp had made 10 changes to his starting XI, giving a debut to Falque and promoting Harry Kane, Andros Townsend and Tom Carroll. The biggest surprise, though, for a manger who was expected to field a severely weakened team, was his selection of Cudicini in goal instead of Heurelho Gomes, who was named on the bench. Giovani dos Santos made his first start for Tottenham in 12 months and there were three youth-team graduates hoping to make their debuts among the substitutes.
Redknapp's callow side, with an average of 23, came on to the pitch to a deafening roar after being taunted constantly by the home fans during the warm-up. The Salonika supporters did not relent once the match started, but Spurs settled easily, keeping the ball well. Neither side threatened for the first 10 minutes before Giorgos Fotakis found space in the box but could only shoot weakly at Cudicini.
Tottenham then almost took the lead when Jake Livermore broke into the penalty area, dodged the onrushing goalkeeper to square to Falqué, but his shot was cleared off the line by Salonika's captain, Pablo Contreras.
The loud, bare-chested fanatical support behind the home goal urged PAOK on and they came close to scoring twice within a couple of minutes. First Vedran Corluka deflected Vieirinha's shot just over the bar before the winger whipped in a dangerous cross which eluded Cudicini but no one was at the far post to tap in.
Tottenham might have been awarded a penalty in the 28th minute when Contreras brought down Kane with a late sliding tackle, but the referee, Milorad Mazic, booked the 18-year-old for diving instead. Mazic then gave a penalty at the other end on the half hour when Cudicini rushed out to bring down Stefanos Athanasiadis in the box.
Mazic booked Cudicini and Lino looked to have scored with a shot straight down the middle as the goalkeeper dived. The referee made the defender take it again, though, after he decided that at least one home player had entered the box and Lino put his second effort wide, much to the frustration of the home support.
Diego Arias was booked for a foul on Dos Santos and Pablo García joined him for a cynical body check on Livermore. Tottenham then built some momentum and Roman Pavlyuchenko twice came close but put both his fierce 20-yard free-kick and spectacular volley from the edge of the area over.
The home side started the second half the much more confident of the two and Dimitris Salpingidis burst into the box, drawing out Cudicini, but his square ball was gathered by Livermore, who sped away from Fotakis before the winger hacked the youngster down from behind to earn a booking. At the other end Dario Kresic wandered out of his area to close down Pavlyuchenko but the Russian wriggled free to square to Falqué, who curled a shot close to the right-hand corner of the empty goal.
Falqué's impressive debut ended when Redknapp brought on Ryan Fredericks to replace him. The game entered a lull before Cudicini suddenly had to make two excellent diving saves to deny Vladimir Ivic and Stefanos Athanasiadis with seven minutes left.
Dos Santos became the fifth Spurs player to be booked in the last minute of normal time when he pulled Ivic's shirt and Cudicini had to be on his toes once more to deny Vierinha in stoppage time with a fine stop.
Redknapp sought to disrupt the Greeks' dominance by bringing on 19-year-old Dean Parrett, but the tactic did not work as Ivic then came close to finding a winner when he hit the bar from Vierinha's cross. PAOK kept on pushing but Spurs held on to start their group campaign with a point.
